CHAPTER TWENTY

Into the Temple of Anesh

“WHY DID WE have to come along?” Sabien whispered to Aurelian, “Those guys know how to fight, we’re just targets for these twisted fucks.”

“Probably so there were more targets for these twisted fucks,” Sabien whispered as they continued down the stone corridor.

“No, it is so that you do not run with the treasure and abandon us here. I do not trust you,” Rasha Ur Ram said in a loud voice seemingly speaking to Sabien.

Aurelian swallowed, he was not sure how the armored man had heard his whisper from the front of the group with his helmet on. He didn’t feel great that the man heard what he’d said, nor did he particularly care for his answer.

“I’m sorry,” an apology was all Aurelian could manage for a response.

“Don’t you think our ship has been looted by now? Wouldn’t be surprised if every deck board is stolen when we get back. I am not looking forward to staying here, can’t believe what’s happened to this place since I last saw it,” Sabien said.

“Your ship will be fine. You have no need to worry, it is protected by something much more malevolent than the disciples of Moloch,” Rasha Ur Ram said, his voice sounding otherworldly from behind the helmet.

“What? Is the Ainsley’s Tartan haunted?” Aurelian asked.

Rasha Ur Ram said nothing for a moment than his voice boomed from beneath the helmet, “Silence! I am paying you to follow me and assist in my mission, not to bother me with your senseless worries.”

Aurelian actually was worried and wished he could talk more about it. He had a pretty good idea that the chest containing the gold was probably gone and the ship was probably on fire. He also thought about Fluffins. Violent, awful people were usually mean to cats and he worried about what might be happening to his big orange pet.

The group quietly moved through the stone hallway which progressively became cooler and damper as they went further. They turned several times down adjacent halls which all looked the same. Aurelian was grateful that the screaming sounds no longer seemed to emanate from any of the rooms. Now there was only the sound of dripping water and the echo of their footsteps off the walls. Xanxor was apparently unable to cast the silence spell along with his magic candle spell and had opted for light. It was a good choice, Aurelian thought.

There were more doors which could have led to rooms or more hallways, Aurelian was not sure. Rasha Ur Ram led the group and seemed to know exactly where he was going. The corridor was a labyrinthine tangle. Aurelian was completely lost as to which way they were going and it occurred to him that if Rasha Ur Ram was somehow struck down, they’d never find their way out of here.

Finally they descended a set of stone stairs. Rasha Ur Ram stopped at a large metal door that ended a long corridor of the hallway. This door was wooden with massive metal hinges.
